The Kalimba is an African musical instrument consisting of a wood board (often fitted with a resonator) with connected staggered metal tines, performed by holding the instrument in the arms and plucking the tines with the thumbs. The mbira is often categorised as part of the lamellaphone household and part of the idiophone household of musical instruments.
Members of this broad family of devices are identified by a wide variety of names. The kalimba is also referred to as marímbula and mbria in the Caribbean Islands.
